Pub row ‘led to shooting after St Paul’s Carnival’: A row between two groups in a pub resulted in the fatal shooting of a man after last year’s St Paul’s Carnival in Bristol, the city’s Crown court heard. My goal – a ‘complete change of culture’: For decades Bristol City’s academy structure has failed to produce much in the way of homegrown talent in the first team – but Tim Kirk, the incoming academy director at Ashton Gate is hoping to instigate a “complete change of culture”. It’s no small task – to turn a footballing graveyard of ambition into a dynamic development structure worthy of its new motto – “where potential meets opportunity”. More from The Post…
News in brief
September meeting set over Ashton Vale town green: Councillors will discuss the future of Ashton Vale at a meeting on September 17, it has emerged. An agreement was reached earlier this month to end the long-running court battle, with Bristol City Council confirming the southern half of the site will be kept as a town green, but a public inquiry will decide on future of northern half and Silbury Strip. Members of the Public Rights of Way and Greens Committee will meet in September to discuss the next move.
New recycling centre planned for South Bristol: South Bristol residents will have access to a new £2m Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC) if plans put before the council’s Cabinet next week are approved. The new centre will be the city’s third HWRC, in addition to Avonmouth and St Philips, and will help the city increase its recycling rates. Plans to restrict the use of HWRCs to residents will be brought in later this year. It will follow a wide publicity campaign. People using the HWRCs will need to show their driving licence, utility bill or council tax bill to show where they live.
Volunteers needed for police custody visits: More volunteers are needed to go behind the scenes of Trinity Road police station to check on the welfare of detainees in police custody. Avon and Somerset Police Authority’s Independent Custody Visiting Scheme recruits local people to make unannounced visits to check custody facilities and conditions.
