Police criticised over man detained with fractured neck: Avon and Somerset police has been criticised after an arrested man was later found to have suffered a fractured neck. The Independent Police Complaints Commission said police were called after the 61-year-old man fell at a bus shelter in Bristol. Medical staff failed to spot the fracture despite a member of the public saying they heard two loud cracks as he fell and hit his head. Avon and Somerset Police said training was being given to officers. Work begins on £2m revamp at the Galleries shopping centre: Bristol’s Galleries shopping centre is in line for a major revamp following the arrival of a new tenant. The owners of the indoor mall have announced a £2 million makeover which will see its layout radically altered. The food court at the centre in Broadmead is to be moved down a floor and a new anchor-store will be created in its place. More from The Post…

Goalkeeper David James released by Bristol City: Former England keeper David James must find a new club to prolong his career after being released by Bristol City. The 41-year-old, who won 53 caps, was among eight players not offered new contracts by the Ashton Gate club. James joined City in 2010, having previously played Watford, Liverpool, Aston Villa, West Ham, Manchester City and Portsmouth. Ex Bristol City boss named England manager: Roy Hodgson, manager of Bristol City in the early 1980s, has been confirmed by the Football Association as the new England team manager. A press conference at Wembley was told the 64-year-old had signed a four-year deal to take charge of the national team, taking him through to the end of Euro 2016. FA bosses revealed they had decided on Hodgson around one month ago and made their approach after his West Bromwich Albion side drew against Aston Villa on Sunday – guaranteeing their Premier League survival. Double dip recession spells trouble for cats: A national cat charity has issued an urgent appeal as more cats are being given up than ever before. Figures released today, and backed by a recent University of Bristol study, show an ever decreasing number of people coming forward to adopt cats, while the number of people needing to give up a cat or report a stray is on the rise. This is the worst it has been for the UK’s leading feline welfare charity, Cats Protection, since the start of the recession, which has led to a plea for help.

Bristol scientists get grant to work on environmentally friendly robots: Robots that decompose once they have reached the end of their mission could soon be deployed in the environment, thanks to a grant to scientists at UWE. Dr Ioannis Ieropoulos, from UWE, will work with Dr Jonathan Rossiter at Bristol University on the project: ‘A robot that decomposes: towards biodegradable robotic organisms’.
