Council votes to scrap its cabinet system: A cabinet system of running South Gloucestershire Council has been scrapped after a narrow vote supported a return to old-style committees. Labour councillors called for committees to make a comeback instead of leaving most of the decision-making in the hands of just seven councillors. Cribbs Causeway Mall expansion approved: Expansion plans for a shopping centre near Bristol have been granted planning approval. A two-storey extension and new entrance will be built at the The Mall shopping centre at Cribbs Causeway. Centre bosses say extra space is needed to attract more big-name stores to The Mall which opened in 1998. More parks and open space saved: Swathes of park and grassland in Southmead, Henbury and Brentry have been saved by the area’s neighbourhood partnership. A meeting attended by more than 80 people at Blaise Primary School Hall delivered the news thousands of campaigners had been waiting for – the protection of green spaces that had been under threat from being sold by the city council. Blueprint for the future of new Frenchay Village: A primary school, shops and 500 houses are part of plans unveiled for the site of Frenchay Hospital. The hospital is due to close, transferring its services to the new £430 million Southmead site and Bristol Children’s Hospital in 2014, and much of the land will be sold on to developers.
