Gus Hoyt, Green: We campaign with the hope that the other parties will follow suit

The beautiful sunny weather was reflected in everyone’s moods as they welcomed us at their doors. Canvassing has been going extremely well.

“Well done darling, this is the best present you could ever give me!” said my mum on mothers-day, as I called her from the campaign trail.

The beautiful sunny weather was reflected in everyone’s moods as they welcomed us at their doors. Canvassing has been going extremely well. We have an excellent and dedicated team and almost everyone we have called upon – from St Agnes to St Andrews — has wished us success in May. It feels as if the time for change is finally here.

People’s main issues are education (University fees and Academy status) and the Cuts — all of which the Greens avidly oppose. The green space sell-offs and the shocking public transport feature highest in the local peeves, two other long term Green priorities.

Of course there is a heavy anti-Lib-Dem feeling on the doorstep. People naturally feel betrayed. Rather than exploit this, I have set strict volunteer guidelines; to point out our alternative and sensible policies – how we will act and vote — and not to exploit this anger. We campaign with the hope that the other parties will follow suit. Besides an election won by misrepresentation and deceit would be a very hollow victory indeed.

Aside from canvassing at least three days a week we have completed another Ashley-wide leaflet in record time! As well as outlining our top five policies, we focussed on the use of neighbourhood roads as “Rat-Runs” and our comprehensive plan for tackling this age-old danger. We also introduced QR reader technology for a link to our website, receiving record visits!

Most evenings have been full of fascinating meetings and project launches — much to the chagrin of my girlfriend…The Bristol Energy Co-OP was inspiring. They aim to supply free electricity to community buildings and promote the fast uptake of Solar PV. We “re-booted” the Montpelier Energy Group with great promise for the future with thanks again to Bristol Energy Network, Bristol Green Doors and The Converging World for their reports and input.

A North Bristol Green Party meeting at Café Kino was squeezed into my diary alongside two for Freebus — a campaign for free local public transport. There was however, some time for relaxing too at Green Drinks at Cosies (after canvassing) and a reunion of us Bristol CAT students (Centre of Alternative Technology) at the Hare on the Hill.

Remember the Referendum on the Alternative Vote on May 5. I strongly urge everyone to vote “Yes” (as well as Green) on this important day. It is a compromise offered by the Con-Dem alliance, however, it is an important first step; if it fails we will be stuck with our current medieval system.

I have been asked to speak on AV both at Speakers Corner and at the Friends of the Earth Debate alongside Paul Smith, Stephen Williams and Charlotte Leslie.

Walking past the Tesco on Cheltenham Road made me feel sick to the stomach. It is nearing completion and teaming with private security guards. How the planning committee passed this development is beyond me. We must vote with our pockets and stay away from the perceived convenience of this shop. It takes money and jobs away from our communities. Support the alternatives and watch this space for some exciting news in the future!

The Westmoreland House (big empty buildings on Stokes Croft!) strategic planning group — of which I am a member — will be meeting in a fortnight to discuss in which direction the development should take. Clearly such a prominent building should have the people of Stokes Croft at its heart and avoid the mistake most inner-city “regeneration” project make. This is an incredibly exciting project and I look forwards to contributing my experience in sustainable building practices.

Now off to write my speech for tomorrow. I hear St Andrews Park beckoning for that task!

It's a shame Wailur doesn't have much to say for himself yet again. Considering he wants our vote it's a shame he leaves you to do all the talking.

    @Local Resident

n case you hadn't noticed yet, any seasoned politician of any stripe approaches any problem with an open mouth.

    Dear Gus,

It is great that you are leading an honest camapign and leading by example, unfortunately it seems as though the LibDems and Labour party are not following suit.
One thing I have noticed however is that they do pretend to be a lot greener these days.
I hope good will prevail in May.

Mr Rodgers, as for you, your main argument seems to be about retaining all power, this is no reason to vote for the LibDems. What a scary thought that you think it is! You have many a disgruntled resident in Ashley, myself included.

It's a shame Wailur doesn't have much to say for himself yet again. Considering he wants our vote it's a shame he leaves you to do all the talking.

    Jon,

If Gus, Thangam or Graham are elected it will be a shame to see you resign as councillor on the basis that you mean what you say when you state it will work better for Ashley ward if it has two councillors from the same party representing it. If it is so difficult for different parties to work together I suppose its lucky that for General Elections, we have the First Past the Post system in this country so that we don't end up with a hung parliament where MPs from different parties have to work together…..oh hang on……

Personally I think that it is perfect feasible for decent politicians from different parties to work together in the interest of their electorate – but then I'm a Green and I support electoral reform especially STV which includes multiple-member seats or as Chris Huhne use to say; “Only the Single Transferable Vote in multi-member seats would abolish MPs’ meal tickets for life," But that was Chris Huhne before he went nuclear talking about Lib Dem policy before the election.

The reality Bristol City Council does have a version of multi-member

How can people like Jon Rogers claim to be in any way "Green" after the Tesco stitch up on Stokes Croft and selling off our Green Spaces?
Go back to your ward and prepare for no overall control Jon!

This election is about (1) who runs Bristol and (2) who represents the ward.

The choice is between Lib Dem or Labour running Bristol for reasons already discussed. In Ashley it is a choice between two councillors of the same party working harmoniously and well together, or two councillors of different parties.

I know which will work better in Ashley and you will understand that I will promote that!

I also believe that will also offer the best option for the city. Political stability rather than a return to the gamble of "no overall control".

"they can vote for our opponents who, should they win, will spend the next two years fighting me for my seat in 2013"

Hate to be the one to break this to you, but this election isn't about you in 2013, it's about which one of the candidates standing in 2011 is likely to represent Ashley ward best.

I also suspect that it is not the mistake of 2007 people in Ashley are most likely to be thinking about this May, its the mistake of 2010 when many of them voted Lib Dem and got Tory.

They voted for a party that said no to tuition fee rises, no to nuclear power, no to "savage cuts", no to building on the green belt, Yes to PR.

They got tuition fees raised, nuclear power stations being given the go ahead, £28m of local cuts in the first year soon to rise to £70m, the green belt being built on, and still no PR.

I can see why you would hope that voters remember 2007 rather than 2010.

Voters in Ashley face a simple choice in May.

They can vote for my colleague Waliur Rahman who will support the work we do in the ward and the city, or they can vote for our opponents who, should they win, will spend the next two years fighting me for my seat in 2013.

Losing Ashley ward could also push the city back to "no overall control" with a very real chance that the mistakes of 2007 will be repeated.

For those with short memories, in 2007 the Lib Dems lost two seats, Filwood and Easton. The Lib Dems remained the largest party on the council, but the Conservative Party and the Green Party councillors voted with the Labour Party councillors to elect Labour's Helen Holland.

Labour then proposed buses on the Railway Path, and were wedded to a mass burn incinerator for Avonmouth. They also stalled on Westmoreland House progress.

    You have been warned.

The Lib Dems have a clear, strong, costed and sustainable program for our ward and our city. A return to Labour chaos is on offer, but do you really want that?

What a shame you are using these reasons for voting Lib Dem rather than highlighting the things you have done for us or intend to do for us. Oh yes, you can't because you haven't lived up to your promises which lured us to vote for you in the first place.

No confidence in Lib Dems in this area I think you'll find Jon. I'm sure the proof will come out loud and clear.

Why would we vote for a party that have not fulfilled their promises to the people they are supposed to represent? Once bitten, twice shy.

"Besides an election won by misrepresentation and deceit would be a very hollow victory indeed."
Thank you Gus, especially for the line above. I assume you are gracefully referring to the LibDems. I was shocked to see the LibDem candidate on my doorstep selling Jon Rogers to me as the reason to vote LibDem in Ashley, I wonder how many local residents have fallen for this!
I would've been happy to see you get the seat and work with Jon Rogers but now I hope that not only do you get in but that the ward has 100% green representation by the next locals.
    Good luck.
