Watch the Ashton Gate Sainsbury’s decision LIVE…

From 6pm tonight, the council will meet to decide whether to approve plans to redevelop Bristol City FC’s Ashton Gate stadium into a vast new Sainsbury’s superstore

“Outline application for redevelopment of Bristol City Football Club ground site for a relocated Sainsbury’s foodstore (Use Class A1), petrol filling station with car wash, car park and associated works.”

… or, in other words, one of the biggest decisions Bristol City Council has had to make recently. The argument over whether Bristol City FC should allow Sainsbury’s to redevelop their Ashton Gate stadium site has split the city, and the local Bedminster Community.

From 6pm tonight, the council will meet to decide whether to approve the plans – which have already been recommended for rejection by planning officers due to the impact on local traders in the area.

Watch it here tonight…

    Vince.
"concerts and shows". So how many concerts and shows are you expecting? If it's more than three you are going to be disappointed. Planning permission for no more than three per year. Read the planning, ignore the hype.

Paul, that's a fair comment but its no about the concerts etc its just a simple saying of why can't we as a city be more in favour to have something for the future

South Bristol is speaking up for itself. That's why it brought a Town Green application and objected to this HUGE supermarket.

South Bristol needs jobs and if that means building on the old rubbish tip then we should welcome the conference centre, stadium etc. The old Sainsbury's site also has permission for a nice housing development that will help local people get homes (many South Bristol people have been priced out of the area by the Yuppies that moved into The Chessels). These homes will provide more customers for North Street and East Street. i shop in North Street every Saturday and will continue to do so wherever the local Sainsbury's is located. The Town Green argument is fanciful – we are not a town we are a city and adequate green space has been provided for this part of the city at Ashton Court, Greville Smyth Park, in Winterstoke Road and on Ashton Vale's old green – The Clannage. It is time South Bristol people spoke up for themselves and got the jobs and homes so desperately needed. Relocating a Sainsbury's will make little difference to the area. PS: When Cashman's closed and became Tesco nobody said a word!!

I think it would be good for the city of bristol if we had the new stadium as it would benefit the local community of bristol who can't travel to london cardiff and birmingham for concerts and shows etc, this would bring a good revenue to Bristol.
As for the local traders i have pity for these people but if you look around the bedminster area and supermarkets there asda, tesco, lidl and aldi by moving one supermarket to another locations shouldn't really effect these traders.
Times move on and Bristol need to do the same to get monies back into our CITY

Vince, they already have permission to rebuild the existing stadium for up to 29,000 people. There is also plenty of possibility for 'enabling' builds on the Alderman Moores site, and the area next to Temple Meads.

There's no need to build a stadium, 2 hotels, a conference centre, car park, a gym, etc on Green Belt land.

Also, the transport plan for the new stadium simply doesn't work and fans will find it much harder to get to the stadium.
