Around the World Cup in 80 pubs - World Cup 2010

It’s hard not to get excited about my latest, greatest commission. I’ve been a football fan since Kenny Dalglish’s Liverpool inspired devotion in the late 1980s, and England’s antics in Italia 1990 only served to cement my love of the beautiful game.

So writing a blog about the 2010 World Cup is as near to a dream job as it gets.

I missed a lot of the 2006 World Cup, working full-time at a daily newspaper. Yes, I could have pulled a sickie but I’m not that good an actress.

Ironically, I start this blog off with a doctor’s note, despite being self-employed. At an assignment in London last week, I tripped outside the Sanderson Hotel and tore a tendon in my ankle. I’m now hobbling around with a walking stick, rocking the sort of granny chic even Kate Moss couldn’t get away with.

But it’ll take more than a purple ankle to stop me writing this blog.

So how will Around The World Cup in 80 pubs work? Firstly, it’s a chance to review the many watering holes Bristol and beyond has to offer. Due to work commitments, I will have to add bars in Somerset and beyond, as I won’t be in Bristol town centre until the later stages. But every pub will be within an hour’s drive from Bristol and, hopefully, an example of the fantastic West country hospitality we all know and love.

As there are only 62 games to review, in the knock-out stages I will have to ‘change ends’ at half-time, reviewing at least two pubs per game. Phew!

For the sake of my liver, I will only drink at games on weekends and/or England games and, for the sake of my waistline, I’m banning bar snacks. Even those fabulous Walkers World Cup flavours.

Each pub will be rated out of ten for customer service, price of a pint, food, TV quality and clientele. And hopefully I’ll have a few adventures along the way though, please, no more drunken stumbles, I really want to be back in my heels by the latter part of the knock-out stage.

So whether you’re an armchair pundit or a pub regular, I hope you enjoy my World Cup Bristol pub guide.
