Bristol Cadets celebrate 150th anniversary
The UK cadet movement is this year celebrating its 150th anniversary — and where better for Bristol youngsters to mark the start of CADET150 celebrations in the city than alongside the world-famous Clifton Suspension Bridge?
The Queen and Duke of Edinburgh will today stop off at Wyvern Barracks, Exeter, during their visit to Devon to launch the regional programme of CADET150.
Her majesty is CADET150′s Patron — a fitting tribute to one of the oldest and most successful voluntary organisations in the world.
Bristol has always played a proud role in the cadet movement, which comprises the Sea Cadet Corps (SCC), Army Cadet Force (ACF), Air Training Corps (ATC) and the schools-based Combined Cadet Force (CCF).
The city has 1,000 cadets supported by more than 300 adult volunteers. Nationally, 131,000 young people and 25,000 adults are involved.
Brigadier Tony Dalby-Welsh, Chief Executive Officer of the Wessex Reserve Forces and Cadets Association, which co-ordinates all cadet activity in the region, said today: “We are delighted to be celebrating a century and a half of this marvellous organisation, which offers such great opportunities to so many youngsters across the UK.
“During this very special year, we will be encouraging people to find out more by visiting events that will reflect the spirit of fun, excitement, adventure and community service of the cadet movement — and, as the CADET150 slogan explains, to ‘Live the Adventure!’”
