Contract signed to build Bristol’s new ‘super’ hospital

A contract has been signed which will lead to work starting on Bristol’s new £430million hospital in Southmead.
The agreement between Bristol NHS Trust and Carillion was the final stage in the process for the hospital, which will bring together services provided at present at Southmead and Frenchay hospitals.
The new super-hospital will be completed in 2014, with 75% of beds in single en-suite rooms and incorporating what has been described by the NHS trust as “state-of-the-art designs” which will replace some of the most outdated facilities in the country.
There will be 800 beds, a new accident and emergency department and community hospital.
The hospital will be built under a Private Finance Initiative by Carillion, which will be in charge of its maintenance for 30 years in exchange for an annual fee from the hospital.
