With high unemployment a reality for many young people during the recession, a new forum has been launched to provide them and employers with the knowledge to make the most of apprenticeships.
The Edge Learner Forum in Bristol, supported by the National Apprenticeship Service, aims to engage young people and employers in finding out about the value of Apprenticeships.
Over a thousand young people in Bristol are not in education, employment or training and an event held last week aimed to break down barriers and perceptions by introducing these young people to those apprentices who are of a similar age.
The event also gave employers the information they need to have a better understanding of whether employing an apprentice is right for them and their business.
Kandace Anderson, of the Edge Learner Forum, said: “I hope that through the forum I can help and inform other young people about all the options that are open for them. There is a huge range of options out there for young people but they don’t know about all of them.
“I think it’s not only young people that need this information but their parents and communities, so that they can support young people when they have to make decisions about their futures.
“It’s not only about information though – it’s also about inspiration. I hope that our work helps to inspire young people and raise their aspirations – they need to know that anything is possible if you go for it. Apprenticeships are great for young people as you get to work in the real world but at the same time learn and earn!”
Cathy Campbell, Learner Services Director for National Apprenticeship Service in the South West, added: “The launch of the forum is fantastic news and will provide a great opportunity for young people and employers to learn from each other.
“The launch event is important and unique; it has been designed, planned and hosted by young to give them a voice in promoting Apprenticeships. It aims, through having an open and honest discussion, to inform young people what it’s like to be an apprentice and we hope by hearing from young people themselves employers will be inspired to find out more about Apprenticeships and open up more places for young people who would benefit from this type of learning.
“I would urge any young people who are interested in joining the forum to get in touch as they can really help to make a difference.”
