Event aims to prove work pays for people on benefits
People on benefits are being offered free training courses and advice into how to get back into the job market at an event next week in Bristol.
The event, run by Bristol City Council and Working Links, is aimed at individuals claiming health-related benefits and the unemployed.

Venue: The Council House will host an event to give people on health-related benefits advice on getting back into work
Council leader Barbara Janke said the event, to be held at the Council House, was meant to give people the confidence that financial and individual support was available – making re-entering the job market worthwhile.
“People on health-related benefits can feel that their chance of getting a good job can be limited by their circumstances,” she said.
“But help is out there to ensure they are supported and treated equally in the employment market. I’m confident that participants will get a lot out of the day.”
The announcement of the event comes a day after it was revealed that two thirds of people on incapacity benefit tested by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) were found fit enough to work.
Of 292,300 people tested since October 2008, just 89,600 were unable to work full-time, according to the government figures.
The other 69% were said to be well enough to have a job and were placed on Jobseekers’ Allowance.
The DWP hopes to save half a billion pounds over three years by cutting the 2.7 million people on incapacity benefit by one million.
The Bristol event takes place on Friday from 12.30 to 4pm. The first twenty clients through the door will each receive a
supermarket voucher for £10 and everyone who registers on the day will be entered into a prize draw to win a £100 supermarket voucher.
