Sainsbury’s reveals vision for a new Ashton Gate
This is how Bristol City’s historic Ashton Gate stadium will look if planning permission is granted for a new Sainsbury’s supermarket on the site.
The retail firm is planning to move from its current site nearby on Winterstoke Road to build a 9,300sqm store – which it says will be green and create up to 400 new jobs.
In addition, it has revealed two options for its current site, which include residential and commercial buildings plus a ‘village green’ area.
Up to £50million will be spent on the redevelopment of the two sites, which the firm says will “make the store more convenient to existing residential areas, develop enhanced pedestrian and cycle links, as well as continued support for local community projects and schools”.
The plans, which will go before Bristol City Council next month, are also an essential part of the football club’s plans to relocate to a new stadium at Ashton Vale – which won planning approval from the council in November last year.
As reported by Bristol24-7 on Tuesday, Sainsbury’s is now holding a series of public exhibitions in South Bristol as well launching a website which will be updated as the consultation process progresses, including the opportunity to submit feedback on the plans.
Jamie Baker, Sainsbury’s Regional Development Executive, said: “We have a unique and exciting opportunity to improve the store for our customers, establish how our existing site can be redeveloped in line with local employment and housing needs and be part of bringing a new regional stadium to Bristol.”
