One last Arctic blast forecast before the big thaw

The Met Office has issued a warning for one last blast of wintry weather across the South West and South Wales on Tuesday and Wednesday.

A 60% chance of heavy snow has been predicted on Tuesday afternoon and the first part of Wednesday, according to the weather service website. Up to 10cm of snow is expected widely, with 10 to 20cm possible locally, and a low risk of up to 30cm over higher ground.

The strengthening southeasterly wind is also likely to lead to drifting of snow, causing disruption to travel networks and problems with power lines.

But the end of the Arctic blast is in site, with temperatures expected to reach 7°C on Friday – bringing relief to the city which is only now beginning to cope with the icy conditions.

All schools are now open according to the city council, while bus services are running as normal – although First Bus is advising passengers to check its website for further information.

Rubbish collections are beginning again, but with a week-long backlog to deal with residents who are due, or who have missed a collection, are advised to leave their refuse and recycling out as normal. The council says it aims to “do all we can to resume normal services as soon as weather conditions allow”.

One of the most spectacular sights of the weekend was the sight of the harbour freezing over, causing the cancellation of the ferry service.

The service linking Temple Meads railway station with Cabot Circus/Castle Park and Welsh Back will operate but services from Hotwells still suspended – check the Ferry Boat website for more information.
