Health services in Bristol are urging people to access a new website that aims to give advice over where to access care over the holiday period.

With added pressure on accident and emergency departments during Christmas and New Year, NHS Bristol is hoping the Choose Well website will be used to ensure 999 services are not swamped with non-emergency calls.

2009-11-06-choose-well-logo-2“Hospital emergency departments and the ambulance service can get very busy at this time of year,” said Dr Hugh Annett, director of public health for Bristol.

“It is important that people in Bristol don’t call on ambulance or visit emergency departments with minor problems which may take up care needed for seriously injured or ill patients.”

Dr Annett said the new website would point those in need to the right services – whether they be NHS walk-in centres, out-of-hours GP services or pharmacies.

“Knowing where you can go for advice or treatment for minor ailments or injuries can save you a frustrating wait and long journey,” she added.

“Please remember, only ring 999 or visit your emergency department when it is an emergency.”
