Charlton Athletic 4 – 2 Bristol Rovers…. Gutsy fightback not enough to avoid loss
A second-half fightback from two goals down was not enough for Bristol Rovers who slumped to a 4-2 defeat at Charlton Athletic tonight.
Deon Burton made one goal for David Mooney then scored a second from the penalty spot as the promotion-chasing Addicks raced into a 2-0 lead after 16 minutes at The Valley.
But Rovers, who had halted their run of six straight defeats with two consecutive home wins in the last 10 days, were not to be rolled over.
Five minutes before the break, Jeff Hughes scored from the spot after Jo Kuffour was fouled by veteran Scottish international defender Christian Dailly.
A great comeback was completed ten minutes into the second half when Chris Lines headed in to draw the teams level.
But the hopes of Gas fans were dashed when Nicky Bailey put Charlton back into the lead after 68 minutes, and the result was put beyond doubt five minutes from time by Akpo Sodje.
Rovers drop a place in League One to eighth and face Exeter City next Tuesday at the Memorial Ground after the weekend break for the FA Cup second round.
