Police have said the jailing of three young thugs who attacked an Asian shopkeeper showed they were “relentless” in tackling racist crime.

Two teenage brothers and a third man were sentenced to 18 months detention and training each for the assault on the shopkeeper in Bedminster.

Luke and Justin Lovedale and Nicholas Gardiner, all aged 17, were sentenced at Bristol Magistrates Court on Wednesday following the attack at Bargain Booze on West Street in June.

All three were also given anti-social behaviour orders, banning them from entering parts of Southville and Bedminster for 30 months.

Detective Constable Gary Booth said: “This was a particularly nasty and unprovoked incident that left the victim injured and very shaken.

“This sentence reflects the seriousness of the incident and highlights that we will not tolerate behaviour of this kind and we will be relentless in bringing those people who think it is acceptable to justice.

“I would urge every member of our communities to be our eyes and ears and report behaviour of this kind.”
