Bristol’s Temple Quarter has been confirmed as the site for The College of Law’s new centre, due to open in September next year.

Close to many key law firms in the city’s expanding business district, the College will occupy 20,000 sq ft on the ground and first floors of Temple Circus, a few minutes walk of Temple Meads Station.

The new centre will serve the South West region and represents a £1.2m investment and creating 40 new jobs,  providing postgraduate professional legal education as well as courses for qualified lawyers.

An open day for prospective students on November 11 at the At-Bristol complex has attracted nearly 200 registrations, and the College’s chief executive said he is expecting more to follow.

“We have seen a real need for an improved postgraduate law education offering in the South West,” said Nigel Savage “and we anticipate the new Bristol centre will generate strong interest from prospective students across the region.

“Our experience in Birmingham and Manchester has been that a strong College of Law presence helps the professional service sector retain the best talent and helps build a sustainable legal services sector.”

The opening of the Bristol centre follows on from other recent regional investments, including a new £5.5m centre in Manchester and a £5.5m extension of its Birmingham centre, which both opened in September, as well as a £2m renovation of its Chester centre, completed last year.

Meanwhile, former student Jane Oakland, a partner at law firm Clarke Willmott, said she hoped the new centre would cement Bristol’s position as the hub of the legal profession in the South West.

“As a former student, I am delighted that The College of Law is coming to Bristol. Its arrival in Bristol will reinforce the city’s position as a major centre for legal excellence and will encourage young graduates to stay and practice in the region. Bristol’s Temple Quarter is an established centre for law firms and therefore an ideal location for the College.”
