Bristol Rovers 2 – 3 Southampton……… Three-goal blitz blows Rovers out of Cup
Three goals in seven second-half minutes blew Bristol Rovers out of this year’s FA Cup at the first round.
David Connolly broke the deadlock after 63 minutes, slotting home from close range after a cross from Adam Lallana, before doubling the advantage five minutes later thanks to good work from Michail Antonio.
The tie was put out of Rovers’ reach two minutes later when Antonio turned from provider to scorer, helped along the way by Rickie Lambert.
The striker, who left Rovers in the summer, could not score on his return and his replacements set about trying to rescue the match.
On 73 minutes, Darryl Duffy pulled a goal back and in the last minute Jo Kuffour was brought down by Oscar Gobern in the area.
Jeff Hughes stepped forward to slot home the penalty but it was too little too late.
Rovers have now lost six in a row in a miserable run stretching back to their league win at – ironically – Southampton in September.
They face mid-table Carlisle at home next Saturday, and will be desperate to end their losing streak.
