Police have confirmed that bones found in bushes yesterday beside the slip road at the M5 are human.
The man in charge of the case, Detective Inspector Richard Budd said he cannot say what the sex or age of the remains are, or how long the bones had been there.
He added that a skull and a pelvis had been found at the scene, but could not confirm whether a complete skeleton was there.
Crime scene investigators are continuing their work at the scene, while uniformed officers conduct a search of the surrounding area.
Later today the bones are expected to be removed for further examination by the pathologist. DNA tests and dental records could be used to identify the remains.
DI Budd said that he was treating the death of the unknown person as suspicious but that it was too early to say whether a crime had been committed.
A workman clearing vegetation next to the slip road at junction 14 for Thornbury made the gruesome find at about midday yesterday.
Police officers and forensic specialists made a detailed search of the area, with one lane of the motorway closed during the investigation. The slip road remains closed.
