Phenomenal Federer wins epic battle
Record-breaking Roger Federer broke the heart of Andy Roddick by winning an epic Wimbledon men’s singles final 16-14 in the final set.

Roger Federer: Record-breaking grand slam winner
Without playing his best tennis, or breaking the brave American’s serve until the very last game of the match, the Swiss genius broke Pete Sampras’s record of 14 grand slam titles, winning 5-7, 7-6, 7-6, 3-6, 16-14 in over four hours on Centre Court.
Roddick, who gave everything to win his first Wimbledon crown, won the first set 7-5 and was 6-2 up in the second set tie-break.
But despite breaking Federer again in the fourth set – having lost the third in another tie-break – and refusing to buckle under the enormous pressure, he lost his serve for the first time in the match in the 30th game of the fifth. The last set was the longest in the history of the Open era.
Federer, who is now installed as world number one after defending champion Rafael Nadal pulled out through injury before the tournament began, assured the crowd after he received the trophy he would return.
He has won 15 grand slam titles in six years and, at 27 years old, still has time to win more.
